GristMill Grind : overview

The GristMill Grind is the sixth annual 5K/10K trail event held at Franklin Creek State Natural Area in Franklin Grove, IL. The event offers two race distances:

• 5K
• 10K

Registration opened September 1, 2025, with an early price of $25 through July 31, 2026. After July 31 the fee is $35, and the race day fee is $45. T-shirts are available for purchase for $20 and are guaranteed for participants who register before August 15, 2026. Online registration closes on September 4, 2026. All proceeds support the Franklin Creek Conservation Association to fund park programs, park expansion, and park improvements. Custom awards are planned for the top three male and female finishers in each distance and for top ruckers in each distance.

Course and race logistics

The course is a technical trail route through Franklin Creek State Natural Area. Runners follow trails with multiple hills and an average elevation gain of about 100 ft per mile. The route includes creek crossings through Franklin Creek - two crossings for the 5K and five crossings for the 10K - and sections of gravel road. Drinking water will be available at the start/finish area and at the mid-race shelter used by the 10K. Participants are asked to bring a disposable cup or a hydration bladder, as cups will not be provided to minimize environmental impact. Check-in takes place at the Hausen Knox Shelter on race day.
