Grasmere Guides and Fell Races

The Fell or Guides Races are a long established part of the Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show, with origins dating back to 1868. The event moved to its current location in 1919 and has run a sequence of junior and senior fell races on nearby fells with measured turning point heights.

Entries are normally made on the day and close 15 minutes before each race. Advance registration is also possible through Events Up North. All age groups are determined as age on the day and evidence of age may be required. Local categories require runners to state their parish and proof of residency may be requested.

Race categories and routes include:

• Under 9s: to the first wall on the fell and return
• Under 12s: to the flags just over the wall and return
• Under 14s: to the second flag halfway up and return
• Under 17s: turning point at about 208.78 m
• Senior Guides Race: turning point at about 294.437 m

Course records are noted by year and time, including a longstanding senior men's record of 12 minutes 21 seconds (1978) and a senior ladies record of 15 minutes 05 seconds (2017). A cash prize of £500 is offered for breaking each senior record. Prizes are also awarded for top finishers, veterans and the first local in each category. Locals include residents of Grasmere, Rydal, Chapel Stile, Skelwith, Elterwater, Wythburn and Loughrigg.
