Grand Canal Canter

The Grand Canal Canter is held twice each year, with spring and autumn editions. The 2026 autumn date is 25th October and the 2027 spring date is 14th March. Events take place in Mid Devon and use the Grand Western Canal Path.

All routes are 100% on hard packed gravel canal paths starting at Tiverton Canal Basin and returning to the Tiverton finish. Available distances:

  • Marathon (uses out-and-back segments to make marathon distance)
  • 20 Miler (March only)
  • Half Marathon
  • 10k

Route details vary slightly by edition. The 10k turns at Tiverton Bridge Car Park. The Half Marathon turns at Sampford Peverel. The 20 Miler and Marathon have specific turn points on the canal and return to Tiverton; the March Marathon is described as a 20 mile out-and-back plus a 6.2 mile out-and-back. Recorded ascent is approximately 90 ft for the Half Marathon, 150 ft for the 20 Miler, and 180 ft for the Marathon, making the course largely flat.

The event is cupless; runners must carry a bottle, cup, or backpack. Water refill containers are available roughly every 3 miles but no cups are supplied. All finishers receive a bespoke Grand Canal Canter medal. An optional event T-shirt will be available from March 2027 for £15. Entry fees and age limits apply and cut-off times are used for each distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
