Fruita Trail Half Marathon
The Fruita Trail Half Marathon is a trail running event held in the North Fruita Desert near Fruita, Colorado. The race consists of a single 13.8 mile loop on flowy singletrack trails. The course features approximately 1,000 feet of climbing, including several short, steep ascents and descents that provide views of the surrounding desert mesas and buttes.
The loop is run in a counterclockwise direction and incorporates technical terrain such as switchbacks. To protect the local ecosystem and fragile cryptobiotic soil, participants must remain on the designated trails at all times. Certain sections of the singletrack are designated as no-passing zones to prevent trail widening. The event takes place in a desert environment where average May temperatures range from 48 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit.
Participants have access to three aid stations located along the route:
- Chutes and Ladders (3.5 miles)
- Frontside (7.5 miles)
- Western (11.4 miles)
The aid stations provide water, sports drinks, gels, and snacks such as chips and candy. This is a cup-less event, so runners must carry their own hydration vessels. Registration includes a finisher's memento, post-race hot food, and beverages. Customized awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in various age categories, ranging from under 20 to 60 and over.
The race is held on Sunday as part of the larger Adventure Fest weekend. This festival includes mountain bike races, gravel clinics, and camping at the North Fruita Desert Trailhead. Athletes seeking an additional challenge can participate in the Fruita AF event, which involves competing in mountain bike races on Saturday before running the half marathon on Sunday.
