Frozen Head Ultra Marathon

The Frozen Head Ultra Marathon takes place at Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg, Tennessee. The event uses the Old Mac Trail circuit, a certified trail loop through dense hardwood forest and ridgeline terrain in the Cumberland Mountains. Each loop includes creek crossings, exposed roots, rocks, and technical sections.

The 2026 event features two distances:

  • Half Marathon : 2 loops, ~13.1 miles, +3,334 ft total gain
  • 50K : 5 loops, ~31 miles, +8,335 ft total gain

Each loop gains +1,667 ft of elevation with zero net gain at the finish. Trekking poles are permitted. The course is the same start and finish each loop and runners must remain on marked trails.

This is a cupless race. There is one fully stocked aid station at the midpoint of each loop and the Start/Finish area serves as an aid point between loops. Drop bags are permitted for 50K participants only and are accessible at the Start/Finish area. Pacers are allowed for the 50K for the final two loops only; pacers must be registered and check in with race staff.

Field size is limited and bib availability is capped; registration closes when the field fills and there is no waitlist. Mobile and GPS coverage may be limited inside the park. Parking is available for up to 150 vehicles with additional roadside parking nearby. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
