The Barkley Fall Classic

The Barkley Fall Classic is a trail race held at Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee. The event is organized as a 50 kilometer course that includes large amounts of climb and descent and numerous scenic viewpoints. Course markings are placed only at major turns and the official course map is not revealed until the night before the race. Because of limited markings, GPS devices are not allowed.

The event enforces specific rules to protect runners and the park. Pacers and outside runners on course are not permitted, trekking poles and GU style packets in their original packaging are not allowed, and drop bags or caching are prohibited. Runners must carry required equipment to continue past the decision point, and must report any decision to drop to staff on site. Discarded trash must be left only in designated containers at aid stations or carried by the runner.

At a split point on the course runners reach a decision: finish a downhill marathon or continue on to attempt the full 50 kilometer route. Choosing to continue removes the option to record a marathon finish. Male and female winners receive guaranteed entries for the spring Big Barkley event. The race also contributes proceeds to local Morgan County organizations and Frozen Head State Park, with donations totaling over $350,000 through 2025.
