Frozen Chosin Challenge
The Frozen Chosin Challenge is a multi-day winter event held at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park in Middle Brook, Missouri. The event honors service members who fought in the Korean War, specifically during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. It emphasizes teamwork and endurance through the rugged terrain of the St. Francois Mountains. Participants navigate ancient mountains, glades, and river crossings in conditions designed to reflect the hardships of the historical winter campaign.
The event offers three distinct distance options based on varying levels of difficulty:
- Chosin Challenge: A 40-mile winter trek over three days and two nights, requiring a two-night bivouac. The route includes the Goggin and Ozark Trail sections, crossing the state's highest waterfall and highest point.
- Devil Dog Challenge: A 17-mile winter trek over two days and one night. This course involves steep inclines, grand vistas, and a one-night winter bivouac.
- Warrior Course: A 4-mile hike along the Black River Trail System. This route is all-accessible, including a boardwalk section, and is open to individuals and families.
The trekking events are team-based, requiring a minimum of two and a maximum of five members. All participants for the 40-mile and 17-mile courses must be at least 15 years old and part of a registered team. The 4-mile course allows individuals, families, and equipment such as wheelchairs or strollers. Each participant receives a commemorative coin and a shirt upon completion.
