Devil's Toll Race

Middle Brook, United States • 4 Oct 2025

Event details

The Devil's Toll Race is a fundraiser for the Ozark Trail Association. The event offers running and hiking formats, available solo or as teams of two. The main course is approximately 13 miles with about 1,400 ft of elevation gain. The course starts near Taum Sauk Mountain and finishes at Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park, traversing Mina Sauk Falls, the rock formation known as the Devil's Toll Gate, Proffit and Wildcat Mountains, and a Black River crossing.

Course, rules and support

The route is marked with a red blaze for the first mile, then traditional Ozark Trail blazes and occasional directionals. Participants should expect rugged, rocky, technical terrain and limited on-course support. Cell service is limited and water will not be supplied on course except for limited access in the first five miles. The event is self-supported; suggested items include strong trail shoes or boots, trekking poles, food and electrolyte drinks, insect repellent, and at least 1 L of water (2 L+ recommended for hikes or efforts expected to last six hours or more). Teams must finish together, pets are not allowed, hikers should maintain hiking or brisk-walking pace, and a Leave No Trace policy is enforced. Registration is nonrefundable. All proceeds benefit the Ozark Trail Association, a nonprofit that maintains the Ozark Trail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
