First State Trail Race
The First State Trail Race takes place in the Brandywine Valley, utilizing the trail networks of Brandywine Creek State Park and First State National Historical Park in Wilmington, Delaware. This event is part of the USATF Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Series and features a course layout that includes rolling hills, woodlands, and active farmland.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 10k (6.2 miles): A route through farmland and forests.
- 25k (15.5 miles): A course featuring hillier terrain and creek crossings.
- 50k (31 miles): An endurance distance passing brooks, ponds, and farm areas.
The terrain consists of varied elevations with several climbs and descents characteristic of the local valley geography. Runners may encounter farm animals, such as cows and horses, grazing in pastures adjacent to the race paths. The event includes a post-race gathering where volunteers provide food for participants.
Registration for the event opens in late June and closes at the end of July of the preceding year. To receive a commemorative race shirt, participants must register at least one month prior to the event date. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
