The Fairfield Horseshoe is a fell race classified as an AM event. It takes place on 9 May 2026, starting and finishing at Rydal Hall near Ambleside. The race follows a 9-mile (14.5 km) clockwise route around the horseshoe, with 2,999 ft (914 m) of climbing.

Course & Rules

The course is marked with flags from the start to a fell gate and on the final descent past checkpoint 5. Runners must follow the flags. A key rule is to keep to the east side of the wall when coming off Dove Crag. There is a cut-off of 1 hour and 30 minutes at the Great Rigg summit checkpoint (checkpoint 2). All runners must carry the required kit as per FRA rules; failure to do so means they cannot start. It is likely a requirement to carry some water will be added.

After the Race & Logistics

Hot drinks and flapjack will be available after the race in the registration room. Prizes will be awarded at around 1:30 PM. Parking is available in an official race car park, signed from the A591, for a fee of £3 per car. There is strictly no parking at Rydal Hall or in the lane leading to it. The car park must be vacated by 4:00 PM.

Registration

Entry fees are £13 for FRA members and £16 for non-members, plus a booking fee. Entries close at midnight on Saturday, 2 May 2026. No refunds are allowed, but runners can transfer their entry to another person up to that time. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
