The Grisedale Horseshoe Fell Race

The Grisedale Horseshoe Fell Race is a traditional fell race organised by the Achille Ratti Climbing Club. It was established in the 1980s and was later renamed the Derek Price Memorial Grisedale Horseshoe. The event starts and finishes at Glenridding Village Hall and follows a route with manned checkpoints on mountain terrain; participants must choose their own optimum line between checkpoints.

The route includes the following manned checkpoints: Catstye Cam summit, Helvellyn (top of Swirral Edge), Grisedale Tarn (eastern end), St Sunday Crag summit, a barn at grid reference 370149 (alternative bridge route at 362143 if the beck is in spate), and a wall stile at grid reference 373160. Organisers place marshals at specified points and have requested compulsory lines on parts of the route to avoid sensitive land managed by the John Muir Trust. Specific instructions include following the main path to Red Tarn, avoiding a direct ascent of Catstye Cam from Red Tarn, and not cutting the corner on Swirral Edge.

Entry is handled through Fabian4 with on-the-day entry possible subject to a maximum of 200 competitors. A kit check and registration take place at Glenridding Village Hall; minimum kit required includes a map, compass, whistle, waterproof jacket with taped seams and hood, overtrousers, hat, gloves and emergency food. Race parking is provided at King George V playing fields, about a 15 minute walk from the village hall. Post race food, refreshments and prize giving are at Glenridding Village Hall. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
