Elephant Challenge - Harwell
Salcey Forest, United Kingdom • 24 Mar 2026
Elephant Challenge
The Elephant Challenge is a timed running event held at Salcey Forest, a Forestry England site located near Northampton. The event follows a 6-hour format where participants can complete as many laps as they choose within the time limit. The course consists of a 3.5-mile off-road loop, and runners determine their own total distance on the day of the event.
Available distances based on lap counts include:
- 5 km (one partial lap)
- Half Marathon (3 laps plus an additional section)
- Marathon (7 laps plus an additional section)
- Ultra Distances (80 km or more depending on pace)
The route remains entirely off-road, utilizing well-maintained crushed stone pathways and forest floor trails. While road shoes are suitable in dry conditions, trail shoes are recommended during wet weather as the forested sections can become muddy. The venue provides access to a café and on-site toilets.
The event is open to multiple participation styles, including running, walking, and rucking. Canicross entries are also permitted with specific rules regarding short leads and considerate behavior. Participants can choose between receiving a finisher's medal or opting for a wildflower seed token that results in a tree being planted.
The forest is accessible via the M1 junction 15 or by the number 33 bus from Northampton and Milton Keynes. All-day parking is available on-site for a fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
