Trail Racing in the Wyoming Wilderness

El Vaquero Loco is a trail running event held in Afton, Wyoming. Established in 2004, the race takes place on rugged terrain within the Wyoming wilderness. The event functions as a community fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting the Star Valley High School track and cross country teams.

Participants can choose from two distinct distances:

  • 50 km ultra marathon
  • 31.9 km trail race

The 50 km course starts and finishes at Cottonwood Lake. The 31.9 km course follows a point-to-point route, starting at Canyon View Park in Afton and ending at Cottonwood Lake. Both routes utilize the natural landscape of the region, providing a wilderness running experience in Western Wyoming.

Registration for the event opens in October trailing into the following year. The 2026 edition continues the long-standing tradition of this community-focused mountain race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
