East Devon 8 Trigs
The East Devon 8 Trigs is a self-navigation event that visits various triangulation pillars located on high ground throughout the Devon landscape. Participants must navigate between these concrete landmarks, which were historically used by the Ordnance Survey for mapping the country. The event is open to both runners and walkers, who can participate as individuals or in pairs. For the 2026 edition, the routes follow an anti-clockwise direction.
Participants can choose from three main distance options:
- 3 Trigs Half Marathon (21 km): This route stays on the western side of the Otter Valley and avoids the highest hills.
- 6 Trigs Marathon (42 km): This course crosses to the eastern side of the Otter Valley and includes additional steep climbs.
- 8 Trigs Ultramarathon (53 km): This distance crosses the Sid Valley to reach two extra trigs before returning via the South West Coast Path.
The event is not way-marked, requiring participants to have a basic understanding of navigation. While suggested routes and GPX files are provided, the specific line taken between trigs is up to the individual. To prove they have reached each landmark, participants must stamp a card at every trig point. All routes begin at the Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club and pass through West Down Beacon and Woodbury Common.
The event base at the Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club provides facilities including car parking, a bar, a cafe, and hot showers. GPS tracking is used to monitor participants during the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
