Driftless Flyathlon
The Driftless Flyathlon is a multi-sport event that combines trail running, fly fishing, and craft beer. It is held annually in the Yellow River State Forest - Paint Creek Unit near Harpers Ferry, Iowa, in October. The event course includes a mostly flat 5 mile trail run and offers opportunities to fish for rainbow trout, brown trout, and the Iowa native brook trout. The event is in person, open to all ages, and provides free parking.
The event is organized by Running Rivers and functions in part as a fundraiser for coldwater habitat projects in northeastern Iowa. Funds raised are directed toward habitat improvement and reclamation projects that benefit fish species native to the local watershed. Running Rivers works with federal and state agencies and nonprofit conservation groups. Event rules emphasize responsible recreation: all fishing is 100 percent catch and release using methods approved for the area, and trail rules highlight proper trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principles. The event also encourages local community involvement and supports spending time and money in the host region. The refund policy states no refunds.
