Dragon's Back Race

Dragon’s Back Race was revived by Ourea Events in 2012, twenty years after the inaugural 1992 race. The event is a multi-stage ultra running route that follows the spine of Wales from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle, crossing major mountain ranges including the Brecon Beacons, Cambrian Mountains, Rhinogs, Moelwyns and Snowdonia. Navigation is unmarked and participants are self-supported within race safety frameworks, requiring constant route finding and mountain judgement over several days.

  • Dragon’s Back Race: six days, about 380 km, 17,400 m ascent.
  • Dragon’s Fire: two days, northern sections through Carneddau, Glyderau, Snowdon massif, Rhinogs.
  • Dragon’s Tail: two days, southern stages across Brecon Beacons and Cambrian Mountains.

The main event covers roughly 380 km with a total ascent of 17,400 m and an average daily distance near 63 km. The shorter Dragon’s Fire and Dragon’s Tail challenges use sections of the same unmarked terrain and condense the experience into two day formats. The next event dates are 7th - 12th September 2026.
