Dragon's Back Race

Dragon's Back Race®

The Dragon's Back Race is a six day, multi stage ultra running event that follows the spine of Wales from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle. The full route covers about 380 km with approximately 17,400 m of ascent. The average daily distance is around 63 km. Navigation is unmarked and competitors are self supported within race safety frameworks, which requires ongoing decision making and mountain judgement over consecutive long days.

The route crosses multiple mountain ranges, including the Brecon Beacons, Cambrian Mountains, Rhinogs, Moelwyns and Snowdonia. Two shorter events use sections of the main route: Dragon's Fire covers northern sections such as the Carneddau, Glyderau and the Snowdon massif including the Rhinogs, while Dragon's Tail covers southern stages across the Brecon Beacons and the Cambrian Mountains. These shorter events run over two days and offer a condensed experience of the same unmarked, mountain terrain. The event was revived by Ourea Events in 2012 after an earlier race in 1992. The next scheduled event dates are 7th to 12th September 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
