Dormouse Challenge

The Dormouse Challenge is a six hour multi-lap trail event held at Salcey Forest, NN7 2HX. The course uses a well maintained off-road loop of about 3.5 miles on crushed stone and forest floor. There is no asphalt; narrower sections contain tree detritus and can become muddy and slippery when wet. Road shoes are acceptable in dry conditions; trail shoes may be preferable in wet conditions.

Aid provision includes mince pies and other treats at an aid station. Dogs are permitted and a canicross specific race is provided; leads should be kept short and canicross runners start with the main field. The organiser allows rucking on the course.

Distances depend on the number of laps completed within six hours. Examples of typical targets include:

  • Half marathon: 4 laps, about 14 miles.
  • Marathon: 7 laps plus a short out-and-back.
  • Ultra totals: many laps can exceed 50 miles or 80 km.

A GPX file for the route is available, though the route may be subject to last minute changes and the course will be marked on the day. Visitor information notes a negotiated parking fee of £3.80 for the day, a bus 33 stop inside Salcey Forest, and Northampton as the nearest train station. The organiser uses tiered pricing and offers an option to receive a medal or a tree token containing wildflower seeds. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
