Dormouse Challenge
The Dormouse Challenge is a timed running event held at Salcey Forest, a Forestry England site located near Northampton. Participants have a 6-hour limit to complete as many laps as they choose on a 3.5-mile off-road loop. The format is designed to accommodate various goals, whether someone wish to complete a single 5 km lap or aim for distances exceeding 50 miles.
The course consists of well-maintained pathways with no asphalt. The terrain primarily features crushed stone or trodden forest floor. While road shoes are suitable in dry conditions, trail shoes are recommended during wet weather as the forest paths can become muddy or slippery.
Available distances and milestones include:
- 3.5-mile laps
- 13.1 miles (achieved by completing 4 laps)
- 26.2 miles (achieved by completing 7 laps plus a short additional section)
- Distances up to and exceeding 80 km
The event is open to runners, walkers, and hikers. Canicross participants are also welcome, provided they register for the specific canicross category and keep dogs on short leads. The venue offers on-site facilities including a café and toilets. Parking is available for a fee, and the site is accessible via the number 33 bus from Northampton or Milton Keynes. Upon finishing, participants receive a medal, flapjack, and a drink, or they can opt for a tree-planting token in place of a medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
