Die to Run Backyard Ultra

Muskogee, United States • 16 May 2026

Event format

Die to Run is a backyard ultra with a variable lap distance set each hour by a six-sided die. Five minutes before the top of each hour the die is rolled; the result becomes the required distance for the next 60-minute cycle. Distances can range from:

  • 1 mile
  • 2 miles
  • 3 miles
  • 4 miles
  • 5 miles
  • 6 miles

If a 5 or 6 is rolled during the first two loops, that hour’s distance is adjusted to 4 miles. The course is a measured, flat out-and-back on the Hatbox trail in Muskogee, OK. Runners must complete the declared distance within the hour to continue. The event continues hour after hour until only one runner remains; that final runner receives a special award. All other finishers receive a custom token indicating their final completed distance.

Logistics and rules

A main aid station at the start/finish provides water, ice, energy drinks, fruit, sweet and savory snacks, and a warm meal from a grill every six hours. A large die roll result is posted on a dry-erase board and announced over the PA system each hour. Crews are allowed and must use designated crew areas. There will be parking and restroom facilities at Hatbox. In lightning, the race will pause for at least one hour and participants will be directed to safe zones. More severe weather may lead to delays or cancellation; registration fees are non-refundable for weather-related cancellations. Packet pickup details will be announced closer to the race. Registration is handled through UltraSignup for a $100 fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
