Death by 5k Oak Mountain
Pelham, United States • 22 Nov 2025
Event format
Death by 5k is a 24-hour challenge that requires each participant to complete ten 5 km races. The 5 km segments are spaced 2.5 hours apart. Participants must be present at the start of each segment and finish that segment before the next one begins. The event includes running in the dark, so headlamps, hand lights, or other illumination are required.
The format exposes participants to physical fatigue and periods of limited sleep. Organizers provide multiple hot meals and snacks during the event.
Location and logistics
The event takes place at Oak Mountain State Park, starting and finishing near the Dogwood Pavilion at the South Trailhead. The course begins on the Lake Trail, continues onto Rattlesnake Ridge, and makes a counterclockwise loop back to the start.
Camping options include sleeping in vehicles in the parking lot or tent camping in the grass camping field across the road. Tent sites are first come, first served, cost $20 per night, and allow a maximum of four people per site; standard park camping paperwork is required at park entrance. Truck campers and camper vans may park in the lot but must occupy only one parking space. Participants must pay the park entry fee unless they have a season pass or a campsite that includes the fee. Registration is initially limited to 200 entrants. Participants receive an event shirt; finishers receive a custom-made coffin. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
