The Cool Moon Trail Races take place in Northern California, offering a variety of distances held over a single weekend in June. The event features a course primarily composed of single track trails and fire roads, starting and finishing at the Cool Staging Area in Cool, California. The course utilizes two primary loops. The North Loop is 13.5 miles long and includes sections of the historic Western States trail, Pig Farm trail, and the Salt Creek Loop Trail. The South Loop is 11.5 miles and covers the Knickerbocker, Blue Oak, and Rim trails, passing by Pilot Hill and Hidden Lake. Longer distances, such as the 100K, involve completing these loops in a specific sequence. The 5K route differs by using a mix of road and trail, totaling approximately 3.43 miles with rolling terrain.
Logistics and Support
The event provides multiple aid stations throughout both loops. The North Loop features full aid stations at The Ranch, Knickerbocker, and the Cool Staging Area, with a water-only stop at the Top of Dam Switchbacks. The South Loop includes full support at Knickerbocker and Catecroft, and water at Pilot Hill.
Athletes in the 100K and 50-mile categories may utilize pacers after completing 38.5 miles. Crew assistance is permitted at the start/finish area. Drop bags are allowed for the 100K, 50-mile, and 25-mile events. All participants receive a finisher's medal and shirt, while specific awards like custom plaques or buckles are provided for top finishers and those completing the longest distances.
