The South Downs Way 50km is a non-stop 50 km trail race held within the South Downs National Park. The route runs along the chalk ridgeway, beginning at Matterley Bowl and finishing in the event field at Queen Elizabeth Country Park, with much of the course following the South Downs Way National Trail and descending from Butser Hill near the finish.
The course covers approximately 4000 ft (1200 m) of ascent and is made up of about 80% trail and 20% road. The event is the second annual running in this format and forms part of the World Trail Majors - Short Series. The race is fully marked and supported by four stocked aid stations, a dedicated race medical team with roving support, and live tracking. Runners must complete the course within a nine hour cutoff. Entry details included an entry fee of £80 and a field of up to 400 starters; entries for 2026 opened on 12 July 2025. There are no qualification standards and the minimum age is 20 in line with UKA rules.
Race procedures include kit checks and mandatory equipment carried at all times, with a one hour time penalty for missing items. Pacers and crew are not permitted. Finishers receive a medal and food and hot drinks are provided at the finish; additional awards are given to the top three male and female finishers and to age category winners.
