Burghfield Common orienteering event

Berkshire Orienteers (BKO) will hold an orienteering event at Burghfield Common on Saturday 22nd November 2025. The event has space for 300 entries; 78 entries are recorded. Parking and assembly are accessed from Reading Road between Burghfield Common and Mortimer Common. Grid reference SU645651 is given. The nearest postcode is RG7 3XG, but this does not take you to the car park entrance. There will be orienteering signs to the car park. The event uses the SI Dibber (chip) timing system. Contactless punching is enabled except for a punching Start and Finish. There will be a 500 m walk from the car park to the start/finish area that includes a manned road crossing. No toilets will be provided. Competitors should bring their own water. Full leg and torso cover is required. Competitors are responsible for their own safety. Newcomers are welcome and should go to enquiries on arrival.

Five courses are offered. Map size is A4. Distances are subject to final controlling.

  • Blue - 5.6 km, 40 m climb
  • Green - 4.4 km, 30 m climb
  • Light Green - 4.1 km, 20 m climb
  • Orange - 2.5 km
  • Yellow - 1.8 km, 5 m climb

Yellow is mainly on forest paths and suitable for beginners; controls are marked by orange and white kites. Orange uses linear features and some direct route choices. Light Green controls are off paths and need accurate navigation. Green and Blue visit most of the forest and include a mandatory, manned road crossing. Entry fees vary by category and by booking date; a non-member surcharge and chip hire charges apply. Lost SIAC dibbers are charged at £72 for replacement.
