Brokenagan Backyard Ultra
Brokenagan Backyard Ultra and 24 Hour Endurance Run
Brokenagan offers two linked events at Silver Star Provincial Park, Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre, on July 25–26, 2026. Registration opens November 1; early entry fee is CAD 100 per runner until January 31. Participants must be 18 on race day or have prior permission for minors.
Backyard Ultra format
- Complete one loop of about 4.17 miles (6.7 km) every hour, on the hour, until one runner completes a loop that no one else does.
- Strictly solo format: no pacing, no substitutions, no outside assistance during a loop.
- Competitors must remain in the staging area between loops; leaving the area counts as withdrawal.
24 Hour Endurance format
- Separate course where runners have 24 hours to complete as many laps as possible.
- Open to solo runners and teams; only one team member on course at a time.
- No support allowed on the loop; aid and crew activity must occur in the staging area.
Logistics and rules The event provides a central staging area with 10x10 spaces for personal aid stations, water and electrolytes for the event duration, on-site first aid, indoor toilets and outhouses, and food service until 3pm. The event is cupless; runners must bring a personal cup. Headlamp is mandatory for night loops; recommended gear includes a small first aid kit, whistle, warm clothing, insect repellent, and bear spray where appropriate. The Brokenagan is sanctioned as a Bronze event in the Backyard Ultra ranking system; the event winner is entered on the Canadian national leaderboard and submitted for Team Canada consideration.
