Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra, West Point, Iowa
Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is a backyard ultra held at South Park and the Pollmiller Lake Campgrounds in West Point, Iowa. The event uses a single repeat loop of 4.167 miles that runners complete repeatedly until only one runner remains who can complete an additional loop.
The loop course runs through the campground and park system and is composed of paved bike path and road (about 80%), crushed gravel (about 10%), and trail or grass path (about 10%). Each loop has approximately 175 feet of elevation gain and 175 feet of loss. The format requires each loop to be completed within one hour, with the next loop beginning one hour after the previous loop. Common aid stations are provided; personal aid is not allowed during a loop. No pacers or non-competitors are allowed on the course, and eliminated runners may not re-enter the course.
Event logistics include a 10 foot by 10 foot area permitted per participant for crewing and tent setup, unlimited water availability, limited fruit and snacks, electrolyte supplements, and coffee while supplies last. Participants may camp on the soccer field infield near the start area on a first-come, first-served basis; the soccer field lights will be used after nightfall. Pollmiller Lake Campground offers electrical campsites and a beach and concession area adjacent to the course. Results record each runner's distance covered.
