Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is an event of the Backyard Ultra Series held at South Park and Pollmiller Lake Park in West Point, Iowa. The format uses repeated 4.167 mile loops that run through the campground and park area. Each loop begins on the hour and runners must complete each loop within the hour to continue. Warnings are given three, two, and one minute before the next loop start. The last runner to complete a loop within the allotted time is recorded as the winner; all others are recorded as DNF if they do not complete their final loop.
The course follows a single loop for all laps. Surface types include paved bike path and road, crushed gravel, and some trail or grass. About 80 percent of the loop is paved, 10 percent is crushed gravel, and 10 percent is trail or grass. Elevation change is approximately 175 feet of gain and loss per loop.
Support provisions include unlimited water, limited fruit and snacks, electrolyte supplements, and coffee while supplies last. No personal aid is allowed during a loop though common aid stations are permitted. Competitors may camp on the soccer field infield near the start area on a first come first serve basis and the field lights are available after nightfall.
