Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra

Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is a Backyard Ultra Series event held at South Park / Pollmiller Lake Park in West Point, Iowa. The event uses repeated loops of 4.167 miles that run through the campground and park areas. Registration closes on September 13; entrants who register by August 1 are guaranteed a hoodie and other swag.

The format requires each loop to be completed within one hour and participants must start each new loop at the sounding of the bell. Common aid stations are allowed but personal aid is not permitted during a loop. No pacers or non-competitors are allowed on the course. The winner is the last runner to complete a loop within the allotted time; all other competitors are recorded as DNF with distance covered reported.

The course follows a single loop for all laps and includes paved bike path and road, crushed gravel, and trail or grass. Surface breakdown is roughly 80% paved path or road, 10% crushed gravel, and 10% trail or grass, with about 175 feet of elevation change per loop. Organizers provide unlimited water, minimal fruit and snacks, electrolyte supplements, and coffee while supplies last; participants are advised to bring the majority of their own aid.

Camping is available on the soccer field infield near the start area on a first come first serve basis. Pollmiller Lake Campground also offers electrical campsites and is adjacent to the course. Local lodging is available in nearby Fort Madison and Burlington. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
