Bradbury Scuffle

The Scuffle is a 6-mile trail race that opens the Bradbury Mountain Trail Race Series. It takes place at 528 Hallowell Rd in Pownal, Maine, on runnable single-track and double-track trails with a few rolling hills and classic Bradbury terrain. The course emphasizes trail running rather than road running.

The race has a cutoff time of 1 hour 48 minutes, equivalent to an 18-minute mile pace. Field size is limited to 180 runners; there is no waiting list, no bib number transfers, and no same-day registration. Limited parking at Bradbury Mountain State Park is noted as one reason for the entry cap.

All registered runners receive a custom race T-shirt for the year. T-shirts are distributed at bib pickup and recipients must be present to receive their shirt. The first overall male and female finishers choose first from the prize table. Additional prizes are awarded by random drawings among winners of each decade age group.

The Scuffle is part of a four-race series. Runners who finish all four races within the cutoff times earn a Bad Ass Hoodie, which is distributed after the final race in the series, the Half-Pint. Overall male and female series champions receive a handcrafted Adirondack chair from Prospect Mountain Furniture along with series apparel and race prizes.

Trail Monster Running organizes the event as a not-for-profit. Organizers and race directors are unpaid volunteers. After event costs, proceeds are donated to local nonprofits including the Royal River Conservation Trust, and leftover shirts or hoodies are donated to local homeless shelters. The event is dedicated in memory of a Trail Monster runner. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
