Bolderwood & Mark Ash Wood Local : Saturday 6th December

A Wessex Orienteering Club forest event at Bolderwood Car Park in the New Forest. Entry is limited to 150 competitors and parking is limited to 50 cars; car sharing is noted. The terrain is mainly deciduous woodland either side of the Bolderwood Arboretum Ornamental Drive; the event takes place with permission from Forestry England. Maps are overprinted with courses at 1:10,000, mapped by SOC. Root stocks greater than 1.5 m are mapped; hides are shown with a black cross. Forestry England toilets are expected to be available. Dogs are allowed if kept on a lead.

Courses, entry and rules

  • Blue 6.3 km, 105 m climb, 14 controls, technical difficulty 5.
  • Short Green 3.2 km, 70 m climb, 10 controls, technical difficulty 5.
  • Score: 60 minutes to visit as many of 30 controls; controls worth 10-50 points (total 600). Penalty of 10 points per full or part minute over 60. Bonus of 5 points per minute or part minute under 60 only if all controls on the entrant’s map are visited. Optimal route for all controls about 10 km with 150 m climb.

Entry fees: senior £8.50/£10.50, senior chip hire £1.00, junior free (junior chip hire £0.00). Juniors are under 21 on 31st December. Entries are open until 23:59 on 5th December while maps remain available. Sport Ident timing with SIAC enabled controls is used; all competitors must dib at both the start and finish. A trail championship at Matterley Basin near Winchester on 4 March 2026, offering 10 km and 20 km races run on 5 km laps with mass starts and on-course water stations.

Trail running at Hinton Admiral Estate on 7 March 2026 with 21.6 km, 15 km and 10.1 km routes; running, canicross and hike options through woodlands, heath and meadows. Finishers receive a medal, a drink and goodies.
