Black Squirrel Trail Half Marathon - Lory State Park

The Black Squirrel Trail Half Marathon takes place on the trails of Lory State Park northwest of Fort Collins, Colorado. The course makes a perimeter loop of the park and offers views to the east of Horsetooth Reservoir, Fort Collins and the Great Plains, and to the west of the Rocky Mountain peaks.

  • 13.5 miles with about 2,000' of vertical gain and descent
  • Kids 1 mile on gently rolling singletrack

Terrain is predominantly singletrack with approximately 12 miles of dirt singletrack and 1 mile of dirt road. Runners climb roughly 1,500 feet between mile two and mile six, then descend over the next two and a half miles before a final section of gently rolling singletrack. Min and max elevations are about 5,400' and 7,000', with an average elevation near 6,100'.

Aid stations are fully stocked with water and a sports drink; one aid station (mile 8.5) offers additional snacks. The course is marked with flagging, pin flags, flour ground markings and directional arrows. Facilities include toilets at the start/finish and at trailheads on course. There is a 5.5 hour overall time limit and a registration cap of 400 participants. Post-race provisions include a pancake breakfast, awards, gender specific race T-shirt, and a pint glass finisher award. Free park entry for the day and professional medical coverage are provided. A one day festival in Lyons Colorado combining gravel and road bike events, trail running races, live music, pool areas and camping. Distances include 100K and 50K gravel rides plus a 5 mile run and several relays.

A USATF sanctioned trail event at Lory State Park on June 27, 2026 offering 5K, 5 mile and 10 mile routes with scenic foothill views, aid stations with biodegradable cups, dog water bowls, bib pickup the day before and post race food.

A backyard ultra on the paved Lake Estes trail where runners complete 4.252 mile loops each hour until one runner finishes a loop alone. The event records yards for DNFs and offers on-site aid and athlete village space.

Repeating 2 km out and back laps on the Thumb Open Space trail in Estes Park. Participants collect a poker chip at each turnaround and the most chips wins during a sunup to sundown timeframe; 35 spots and a $100 entry fee.
