Black Mountain Trail Races
Black Mountain Trail Races take place on June 20, 2026 in San Diego at Black Mountain, also known as Amat Kwanyil. The event is based near 9711 Oviedo Way and features multiple trail distances on public open space.
The course traverses an ancient extinct volcano and land long associated with the Kumeyaay People. Vegetation includes chaparral and coastal sage scrub, with manzanita-lined single-track and sections of jeep trail. The route passes an abandoned arsenic mine and habitat for wildlife such as deer, bobcats, red diamond rattlesnakes, and the occasional mountain lion.
Distances:
- 50K
- 25K
- Half marathon
Elevation gain is about 5,500 feet for the 50K, 2,500 feet for the 25K, and 2,000 feet for the half marathon. Trails are described as rocky, steep, and technical, offering a balance of technical single-track and jeep trail. The 50K course was slightly modified in 2025 to address a private property issue. Aid stations are supported by the San Diego Ham Radio Community, with radio operators relaying information to race headquarters. The event follows Trail Sisters guidelines and is part of the SoCal UltraRunner’s Grand Prix. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
