Black Mountain Trail Races

The event stages trail races on the slopes of Amat Kwanyil, an extinct volcano in San Diego that is Kumeyaay land. The open space includes an abandoned arsenic mine, chaparral and coastal sage scrub, and manzanita-lined single-track. Wildlife reported in the area includes deer, bobcats, red diamond rattlesnakes, and the occasional mountain lion.

Courses mix technical single-track and wider jeep trails. Trails are described as rocky, steep, and technical in places, offering varied terrain and opportunities for different runner strengths. The 50K course was slightly modified in 2025 to address an issue with private property. The event is sponsored by San Diego Ultra Running Friends (SURF).

Distances and approximate elevation gain are:

  • 50K - about 5,500 feet elevation gain
  • 25K - about 2,500 feet elevation gain
  • Half marathon - about 2,000 feet elevation gain

Registration closes on Monday, June 15 at 11:59 PM PT. The event lists race distances of 50K, 25K, and half marathon and takes place in San Diego, CA. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
