BigXmas Trail Festival : event overview

BigXmas Trail Festival takes place on 14 December 2025 at Sale Water Park, Rifle Road, Sale, M33 2LX. The event offers three trail race distances, all starting and finishing at Sale Water Park and following local greenspace routes that include Chorlton Water Park and the River Mersey. The marathon route follows the Trans Pennine Trail to Little Bollington and returns along the Bridgewater Canal. The courses are fully marked and marshalled and the event is chip timed.

Practical information

Aid stations are provided on the Half Marathon and Marathon routes. Finishers receive a bespoke medal or may opt to have a tree planted instead of a medal. Finish-line refreshments include mince pies and mulled wine. Parking is available free at Sale Water Park with nearby overflow options. Bag drop tents will be available in the start/finish area. Canicross entries are not accepted.

Mandatory kit and requirements include the ability for marathon runners to carry 500 ml of fluid, a waterproof jacket, hat, gloves, buff, and a mobile phone. Runners are advised to download the GPX file of the route to a wearable device or phone. Cut-off times: no cutoff for 11 km, 3.5 hours for the Half Marathon, and 7 hours for the Marathon.

Run the Petzl Night Runner at Rivington under head torch light, choosing 10 km or a half marathon on glow in the dark trail signage. Expect rough, boggy, rocky terrain, a finisher medal and lively post race buzz.

Take on The Half & Half 10 km on 25 January 2026 at Sowerby Bridge for a split terrain challenge. Rugged muddy trails and obstacles give way to a tarmac finish, entries are limited to 100 and hoodies are available to pre order.

Timed lap based event on a flat 5.3 km riverside out and back near Hardy Farm in Manchester, with flexible distances from 5 km to ultra and a seven hour time limit. Medal free entry option and a charity donation per finisher.

Hoofstones Fell Race in Todmorden covers 8 miles with 425 m of climb across the Pennines, testing navigation skills. Race HQ is the Staff of Life pub where post race refreshments and prizes await; entries accepted pre entry or on the day.
