Trail Running on the Isle of Purbeck
BigSea is a trail running event located on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. As part of the Classic Element Trail Series, this race is themed around the element of water and features courses that traverse the rugged coastline. All routes begin and end on the sand at Knoll Beach in Studland.
The event offers four distinct single lap distances:
- Half Marathon
- 18 Miles
- Marathon
- 54 km Ultramarathon
Participants travel through several landmarks along the Dorset coast and countryside, including the Purbeck Hills, Corfe Castle, and Kimmeridge Bay. The routes also pass Chapmans Pool, Dancing Ledge, Durlston Castle, and the Old Harry Rocks.
The course is fully marked with arrows, and a bag drop tent is available at the event site. Aid stations are situated along the routes, providing water, flat coke, and a variety of sweet and savoury snacks, including vegan options. This is a cupless event, and runners must carry at least 500ml of fluid. Electrolyte drinks and energy gels are provided through a partnership with Precision Fuel and Hydration.
Time limits are in place for all distances, with a 5-hour cutoff for the Half Marathon and 18 Mile races, and a 9-hour cutoff for the Marathon and 54 km distances. Finishers receive a bespoke medal, though participants may choose to have a tree planted instead through the Trees Not Tees organization. Canicross entries are not permitted for this event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
