Day of the Dead Half Marathon: Parks Edition : Wheeler Park, Oklahoma City
The event centers on a chip timed half marathon of 13.1 miles held in and around parkland at Wheeler Park in Oklahoma City. The course passes through varied park scenery and includes aid stations that provide water and on-course assistance. A post race rally tent hosts live music, announcements, and a selection of Mexican treats and refreshments.
Distances offered include:
- Kids Dash - about 20 yards for ages 10 and under.
- 1 Mile - one mile, untimed, includes tee shirt and medal.
- 5K - 3.11 miles, chip timed, overall trophies and age group awards.
- Quarter Marathon - 6.55 miles, chip timed, overall Bigfoot trophies and age awards.
- Half Marathon - 13.1 miles, chip timed, overall Bigfoot trophies and age awards.
- Volunteer then Run - help with packet pickup then run any distance; includes chip timing.
- Virtual Run - 13.1 miles, virtual participation option.
A costume contest takes place before the race with judging based on creativity, authenticity, and overall impact; the winner receives the Day of the Dead Best Costume Award and a prize package. Standard awards for the 5K, Quarter Marathon, and Half Marathon include trophies for overall winners, special recognition for masters, and age group pins for top finishers in each bracket.
Packet pickup is offered starting 1.5 hours before the event start time. Shirt requests are guaranteed only if ordered at least 10 days before the event. Course surfaces may include paved trails, crushed granite, and occasional dirt paths. Volunteer roles include course monitoring and aid station duties with volunteer incentives such as shirts, souvenir medals, VIP access, and a future event entry or a prepaid digital gift card.
