Event Overview
The Big Tex Backyard Ultra is held at Stephen F. Austin State Park in San Felipe. The event features a "last runner standing" format where participants complete a designated loop every hour. The park offers a network of wide, crushed gravel trails with minimal elevation change. The race center is located near a group dining hall with a large grass area for personal aid setups.
Race Formats
The event includes several categories with specific distance requirements:
- Last Runner Standing: Participants run a 4.17 mile loop every hour.
- Last Rucker Standing: A rucking division held on a shorter course loop.
- Lil Tex Kids K: A 1 km trail race for participants aged 14 and under.
Backyard Rules
Standard backyard format rules apply to the main event. A new "yard" or lap starts every hour on the hour. Runners must be inside the starting corral before the start signal to continue. Warnings are given three, two, and one minute before each start. Participants must complete the loop within the hour to remain in the competition. The event continues until only one runner remains to complete a final solo lap. Trekking poles and pacers are not permitted.
Participant Support and Facilities
The event provides fully stocked aid station support for all participants. Runners and crews can set up personal areas with chairs and tents in the grass area around the start and finish line for rest between laps. The park also provides reserved campsites and full hookup RV sites for those staying on-site. All participants receive a hoodie and a customized poster to track their completed yards. Runners who complete 24 yards receive a 100 mile buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
