Big Bear Squatch North
The Big Bear Squatch North is a trail running event at Harriman State Park in Bear Mountain, New York. It is the fifth edition of the event, co-hosted by the event organizers and the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. Part of the registration fee helps the Trail Conference maintain trails at Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park.
Course and Distances
The event features two distances on a rugged, mountainous course with technical trails, steep climbs, descents, and sections requiring scrambling. The course is not flat. Distances and elevation gain are:
- 10K with 1,400 ft of elevation gain.
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles) with over 2,600 ft of elevation gain.
The half marathon course consists of two sections. The first is a 7.5-mile loop described as less rugged, after which runners return to the start/finish. The second section follows the 10K course. The 10K route includes views of the New York City skyline, the Hudson River, and the Hudson Valley, with highlights like Cat's Elbow and West Mountain.
There is a 6-hour time cutoff for both distances. The required minimum pace is 27 minutes 30 seconds per mile for the half marathon and 58 minutes per mile for the 10K to finish by the cutoff.
Additional Information
A separate Rucking Division is offered for the 10K distance. It has two weight categories: Lightweight (15 lbs) and Heavyweight (30 lbs), carried in a pack or ruck. All rucking participants receive a GoRuck patch.
The event is a qualifying race for the separate Mountain Madness Series, which involves completing four specific mountain events.
The event organizers offer a Hardship Entry option for participants experiencing financial hardship. They also have specific deferral policies for pregnancy, adoption, postpartum recovery, IVF processes, and community care concerns related to immigration enforcement.
