Beast of Bamford Fell Race

The Beast of Bamford is a Christmas fundraising fell race for Bamford Recreation Ground. All funds raised go towards refurbishing the play park on Bamford with Thornhill Recreation Ground. The event is a winter race in its third year and follows a bat shaped, anticlockwise tour of the Hope Valley skyline around the village of Bamford in the Peak District.

Highlights of the route include running across Bamford Moor, along Bamford Edge, passing the Ladybower plug holes, ascending Win Hill, and finishing at the Recreation Ground. The event offers two route options:

  • 15 km (9 miles), ascent 650 m
  • 25 km (15.5 miles), ascent 1100 m

Each route has mandatory checkpoints shown on the provided maps; runners must visit all checkpoints to complete the race. Back markers will follow the suggested route and assist runners in difficulty. Participants may choose other lines where they have right of way. Purple areas on the map are out of bounds and entering them may result in disqualification.

The race is licensed by the FRA under UKA Rules and categories include navigational skill requirements. FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit must be carried for the whole race and will be checked at the start and possibly at the finish. Registration is at Bamford Village Institute. Free car parking is available on Bamford with Thornhill Recreation Ground, S33 0DA, off Station Road. Entry fees vary by membership and on the day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
