Two Tunnels Railway Races

The Two Tunnels Railway Races take runners through the Two Tunnels Trails beneath the city of Bath and use Brickfields Park as the start and finish location. The route includes two lit, surfaced tunnels: Devonshire Tunnel (408 m) and Combe Down Tunnel (1672 m). The tunnels were sealed after the Somerset & Dorset Railway closed in 1966 and reopened as a shared use path in 2013 following work by local groups and Sustrans.

Distances and event types include:

  • Colourburst fun runs including 500 m and 2 km options
  • 5 km
  • 10 km (Return Ticket and Hilly Ticket options)
  • Half Marathon (multiple Ticket options)
  • Marathon
  • 50 km Solo and 50 km Pair
  • 5 x 10 km Relay

Course surfaces vary by Ticket: Return Ticket routes are essentially tarmac, Hilly Ticket routes mix tarmac, woodland trail and stone paths, and City Ticket routes mix tarmac, canal towpath and river path. The 5 km has no drinks station; other distances have 1 to 9 feast stations offering water, electrolyte and a range of food including gluten free, dairy free and vegan options. All finishers of 5 km and longer receive a two-sided 10 cm x 10 cm medal. There is a 3 hour cut off to start lap 2 of the marathon and an 8.5 hour cut off for the 50 km. Pure walkers are not eligible.

Logistics note: there is no on-site parking; Odd Down Park & Ride is used for car access. Bike racking is provided and buggy runners may use certain Return Ticket routes; canicross is not permitted. Events are affiliated to UK Athletics and some distances are officially measured. The organisers contribute £1 per runner to Sustrans; over £30,000 has been raised to date.
