Bad Little Trail Run - 8 Mile and 2.5 Mile
The Bad Little Trail Run takes place in Whitneyville, Maine on 27 September 2026 and runs through the Machias River Preserve and along the Downeast Sunrise Trail. The event is presented by local conservation and running organizations to raise awareness for protection of Downeast Maine wild places.
Distances:
- 8 miles
- 2.5 miles
Both races start and finish on the multi-use Downeast Sunrise Trail next to the Whitneyville access parking lot. After a short stretch on a wide, level gravel trail, participants cross the Machias River on an old railroad bridge and the courses split. Much of the route uses narrow singletrack that is twisting, undulating and can be muddy or slippery but is maintained.
The 2.5 mile course follows the Sunrise Trail to the Homestead Trail, climbs to the old homestead site on about one mile of singletrack, then returns via a short quarter mile section to the finish.
The 8 mile course includes the Homestead Trail, the Heritage Trail, a section through the Court Street parking area past a self serve water station, and the Munson Pitch Trail along the Machias River. Riverside sections include grassy areas with hidden roots and occasional mud holes. Both courses are marked with blue surveyors flags; runners should keep flags on their right and note clusters of flags at turns or junctions.
Entry fees include a finisher gift, post-race BBQ and potluck refreshments, a free raffle for a $100 RunningWarehouse gift certificate, and awards. Awards are given to the top three men and women and across age groups 17 and under, 19-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and over. Registration fees are $25 for the 8 mile run and $20 for the 2.5 mile run or walk. Day of registration is possible by cash or check at higher fees and numbers are limited. Washington County youth may be eligible for free entry; the organizer can provide details. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
