Courses run through desert and canyon terrain with deep sand, exposed slickrock, sandy jeep roads, narrow slot canyons, steep climbs, ladders, short scrambles, and sections with cable assisted descents. Notable views include areas near Horseshoe Bend, Marble Canyon, Lake Powell, and the Page Rim Trail finish sections.
Aid stations are fully stocked with water, Gnarly Fuel2O, fresh fruit, soda, sweet and salty snacks, and portable bathrooms. Longer aid stations also carry salt and electrolyte caps, anti-chafing agent, sunscreen, first aid supplies, and medical staff. The race operates a cupless system for cold drinks; runners must carry their own bottle, cup, or hydration system. Hot cups are available for coffee, broth, and soup.
Crew and pacer rules vary by distance: crew is permitted for 50 Mile and 55K; pacers are permitted for 50 Mile only. Drop bags are allowed for longer distances and must be labeled, left by the designated evening before the race, and meet size limits; drop bag return procedures and a mail option are provided. Medical support is provided by a race medical team with personnel at major aid stations and mobile medical vehicles.
