Across The Cynllaith Hillwalk

Trefonen, United Kingdom • 23 May 2026

Event Overview

The Across The Cynllaith Hillwalk is open to walkers and runners. The event takes place on a route that crosses the Afon Cynllaith through fields, woods, lanes, and moorland, traversing hills on either side of the Shropshire-Mid Wales border. Both route options finish on the Offa’s Dyke National Trail.

Route Details

There are two route distances: 16 miles and 10 miles. Both routes start and finish in Trefonen and check in at Llansilin. The shorter route is circular, while the longer route adds another circle to form a figure of eight with Llansilin at its centre. Participants can choose their route on the day. The overall ascent on the 16-mile route is approximately 987 meters. Most participants take between 5 to 8 hours to complete the long route, including stops. The routes follow rights of way and paths with permission granted for the event day. The route will be well marked and supervised, with written directions provided as a backup. There are many stiles on both routes.

Event Logistics

Registration takes place at Trefonen Village Hall. Slower walkers must start early from 8:00 AM, while fast walkers and runners should start after 9:00 AM to ensure checkpoints are open. Registration closes at 9:30 AM. Checkpoints are located at Llansilin (mandatory for all), Craig Sychtyn, and the finish at Trefonen Village Hall. Participants must provide their entry numbers to checkpoint marshals. A cut-off time exists: walkers arriving at Llansilin after 12:00 PM will be directed to take the 10-mile route. A back marking team will walk the route from 9:30 AM to collect waymarking tape.
