Ode in the Snow: 8 Hours of Ode

This event is a winter trail running meet held in Holly, Michigan, centered on a 4.167 mile loop at McGinnis Road. The loop has about 450 feet of climbing, is roughly two thirds technical single track, one third moderate walking or hiking path, and includes a few hundred yards of pavement. Trailers for the 5k and 10k use the same loop with a shortened out and back section.

Available race formats and distances:

  • Trail 10k
  • Trail 5k
  • Trail 4.17 mile loop
  • 8 hour on site continuous or backyard style
  • Virtual 8 hour option

The backyard format allows runners to start hourly and to switch mid event to continuous status; once a runner converts to continuous they remain in that division. Contestants provide their own aid. Pacers are not permitted except for continuous runners who exceed ten laps. Crew support is permitted. Runners receive a chair or cooler space within 40 yards of the start and may use one canopy up to 10' x 10' with enclosed sides. Fuel camp stoves are allowed with a fire extinguisher; charcoal or wood fires are restricted to designated campground facilities. Camping is not allowed in the start and parking area but is available in the campground north of the park.

Event provisions and rules include water and coffee, no hiking poles dogs or strollers on course, no glass containers, and no headphones on the trail. A headlamp or carry light is required after dusk for anyone on the trail.

Prizes and recognition vary by division. On-site ultra prize winners may claim entry to a future Ode to Laz Backyard Ultra for a set fee. Medals are awarded for the 5k 10k and 4.17 mile distances. Virtual division awards are based on outdoor distance recorded by GPS with an 8 hour window and include a distinct beanie prize. One prize per person no transfers.
