Ode in the Snow 8 Hours

Holly, United States • 16 Jan 2027

Event Details

The event is called Ode in the Snow (8 Hours of Ode). It takes place in Holly, MI. The available distances are a Trail 10k, an 8 Hour run, a Virtual 8 Hour run, a Trail 4.17 miler, and a Trail 5k.

Course

The trail loop is 4.167 miles long with approximately 450 feet of climbing. The terrain is two-thirds technical single track and one-third moderate walking path, with a few hundred yards of pavement. The 5k and 10k courses use this loop but delete a specific out-and-back section. Traction aids for shoes are advised due to winter conditions in Michigan. Hiking poles are not allowed on the trails.

Race Format

Runners can choose between two formats. The "Backyard Style" involves starting a new lap every 60 minutes. The continuous format allows runners to complete as many laps as they can within the 8-hour window. Runners can switch from the "Backyard" format to continuous at any time, but not vice versa after the second loop starts. The last lap for any runner starts at or before 4:20 p.m., and continuous runners have unlimited time to complete their final lap.

Logistics

On-site registration opens at 7:30 a.m. on race day. Runners in the first wave and ultra distance must complete registration by 8:45 a.m. Water and coffee are provided. Runners can set up a personal space with a chair and cooler within 40 yards of the start/finish line. Canopies up to 10x10 feet are allowed. Alcohol is permitted, but glass containers, charcoal fires, and wood fires are prohibited (except in designated campground facilities). Camping is not allowed in the start/finish area or parking lot but is available in the nearby McGinnis campgrounds. Headphones are not allowed on the trails. A headlamp or carry light is required for anyone on the trail after 4:20 p.m.

Awards

On-site ultra runners who complete at least one loop receive a collectible Ode mug. Overall distance winners (male and female) must complete at least 9 laps to be eligible for a prize entry into an Ode to Laz Backyard Ultra race. Backyard format winners are determined by the least total run time for 8 laps. Virtual runners can compete for an Orange Beanie by running the most outdoor distance in 8 hours, verified by a GPS file. All 5k, 10k, and 4.17-mile runners receive a race medal.
