Course and format

The main course is a 4.167 mile trail loop with about 450 feet of climbing. The loop is roughly two thirds technical single track, one third moderate walking or hiking path, and includes a few hundred yards of pavement. The 5k and 10k use the same loop but remove an out-and-back section; those distances include an immediate u-turn after a stair climb. The event offers a "Backyard" format where runners start a new lap every 60 minutes and may run as many laps as they wish up to eight hours. Runners may switch from the backyard format to a continuous format during the event; switching back is restricted after the start of the second loop.

Rules and prizes

There is no chip timing. Contestants provide their own aid; crew is permitted. No hiking poles, dogs, strollers, or headphones on the trails. A headlamp or carry light is required after dusk. Water and coffee are provided on site; glass containers are prohibited and alcohol is allowed. On-site ultra prize winners receive a paid entry option for a future Ode to Laz Backyard Ultra for $15. Finishers in fixed distances receive medals. Virtual runners submit GPS results and compete for a distance prize. One prize per person.
