Ode in the Snow : 8 Hours of Ode

The event takes place at 5000 McGinnis Rd., Holly, MI, and offers on-site and virtual formats across several distances. Runners may choose a timed 8 hour option or shorter trail distances on a repeated loop course. There is no chip timing for the event.

Distances:

  • Trail 10k
  • 8 hour
  • Virtual 8 hour
  • Trail 4.17 miler
  • Trail 5k

The course is a 4.167 mile loop with approximately 450 feet of climbing. About two thirds of the loop is technical single track, one third is moderate walking or hiking path, and there are a few hundred yards of pavement. The 5k and 10k use the same circuit but omit an out-and-back section; those distances include a turnaround after the stairway climb.

Format and race rules include an hourly "backyard" start option with the ability to switch to a continuous format during the day. Contestants provide their own aid; crew is permitted. Pacers are not allowed except for continuous runners who exceed 10 laps. No hiking poles, dogs, strollers, or headphones on the trails. Traction aids for shoes are advised for winter conditions. Water and coffee are provided and glass containers are prohibited. A headlamp or carry light is required for trail use after the late afternoon cutoff.

Prizes and awards vary by division. On-site ultra winners earn a $15 entry into a choice of that year's Ode to Laz backyard races. 5k, 10k, and 4.17 mile finishers receive an Ode race medal. On-site ultra finishers who complete the race or at least one loop receive a collectible mug. Virtual division awards go to the male and female who post the greatest outdoor distance in an 8 hour period, with GPS proof required.
