About the race

Winter Solstice Challenge takes place on 20 December 2026 at Abberton Reservoir Visitors Centre near Colchester, Essex. The event is a lap-based running challenge on an off-road loop around the reservoir; each lap measures just over 5 km and the paths may be muddy. The route passes areas with wildlife and open countryside. Participants may choose how long to run during the timed six hour challenge; some runners may cover marathon or longer distances by completing multiple laps.

Laps start and finish at the Visitors Centre, where a feed station will be available for all participants at no extra charge. The Visitors Centre will be open in the evening and refreshments will be available to purchase for spectators. The event is held in association with Essex Wildlife Trust; a donation from the proceeds will be made to that charity. Entry fee is £24.

Every participant receives a medal. Event apparel such as T-shirts and vests is available for purchase on signup. The organiser lists a total capacity of 75 places and the event status is open. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
