Wild Isle Backyard Ultra

The event is a backyard ultra held at Harvey Browns, Hale Manor Farm in the Arreton Valley on the Isle of Wight. Runners complete repeated countryside laps on a measured loop that returns to the event base each hour.

Each lap, called a yard, is 4.167 miles. A new yard starts every hour on the hour. Runners must complete the lap within the hour and be back in the starting corral for the next bell. If a runner fails to complete a yard in time or does not start the next one, their race ends. The full event continues until only one runner remains; that runner must complete one final yard alone.

The proposed loop includes a section of the Sandown-Newport cyclepath and features about 72 metres of climbing per lap. The final route will be confirmed and measured before the event.

Between laps the event provides a communal atmosphere. Runners and their crews share time between laps to rest, eat and prepare. The format allows participants to set individual targets or to continue until they can no longer complete the hourly yard.

There are two entry options:

  • Full Backyard Ultra no fixed distance
  • Mini Backyard The First 7 Bells covering 29.17 miles

Entry prices listed for the event range from £65 to £95. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
