West Highland Way Challenge Race

The West Highland Way Challenge Race is an ultra trail event that follows the West Highland Way from Fort William to Milngavie. The main race covers 96 miles with about 14,700 ft of ascent. An alternate route adds Ben Nevis, lengthening the course to 107 miles with about 19,175 ft of ascent; the Ben Nevis addition reaches the summit at 1,344 m and is allowed only with prior approval and when conditions permit.

The race is point to point, waymarked, and equipped with over 100 reflectors at junctions. Organisers provide food and drink at nine locations and issue GPS trackers to competitors. Entrants may leave two race drop bags at registration for delivery to Bridge of Orchy (about 35 miles) and Rowardennan (about 68 miles), plus a finish bag; used drop bags are returned to the finish. Competitors who withdraw at checkpoints or road crossings can be transported to the finish in Milngavie.

Finishers receive a boxed Glencairn crystal fluted wine goblet. Competitors who complete the 96 mile course in under 24 hours receive a personalised keyring and membership of the West Highland Way In A Day Club. Cut off times are based on an average walking speed of 2.7 mph, equivalent to a 35 hour limit for the full course. The race accommodates a wide range of entrants from experienced ultra runners to steady walkers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
