Weekend at Burney
Weekend at Burney is a looped trail event held at 22800 Guest Ranch Rd, Cassel, CA, in Lassen National Forest. The event uses an approximately 4.8 mile loop for all distances and timed events. The course combines flowy single-track trail and forest road with rolling hills and wooded sections, and it passes Baum Lake on each loop. Each loop has about 370 feet of elevation gain and loss.
A central aid station and staging area at the start/finish is fully stocked with traditional runner snacks, soda, water, electrolytes, hot made-to-order food, and a broth bar. The looped format lets participants track progress by lap and repeat the loop as desired within their chosen time format.
Event formats include:
- 48 hour challenge
- 24 hour challenge
- 12 hour format
- Single-loop 4.8 mile run
Crew access is limited to the main staging area; tents or crew areas are available for longer formats. A burro race runs on the loop as well. Burro entrants must bring and care for their own animal, treat animals humanely, and equip a pack saddle with a shovel, pick, and pan for an official finish. Rules also specify a maximum 15 foot rope and that burros may not carry a person.
Race swag is offered to runners who register before the swag deadline of October 1, 2026. Solo runners who reach 100 miles receive a belt buckle. A cash prize for the most miles is funded by ten dollars from each registration. Forever Home Donkey Rescue is listed as a sponsor of the burro race.
