Event Overview

Burney Basin Days is a trail running event held in Burney, California, organized by Intermountain Endurance. The event takes place on a portion of the Historic Great Shasta Rail Trail, providing participants with the opportunity to traverse the landscape of the Burney Basin. The race features traditional running distances alongside a unique burro racing category.

Course and Distances

The event utilizes the local rail trail system, with all participants starting from the same location where the trail crosses Black Ranch Road. The available distances include:

  • 5 km
  • 10 km
  • Burro race

The 5 km route involves a turn-off before the 10 km split, while the 10 km course offers an extended path through the basin. All distances begin simultaneously at the designated start area located approximately 2.5 miles down Black Ranch Road from Highway 299.

Burro Racing Regulations

Participants in the burro race category may run with their own donkey or arrange for a rental prior to the event. This category follows specific welfare and equipment guidelines. All burros must be treated humanely and are required to wear a pack saddle. This saddle must carry a shovel, a pick, and a pan.

The lead rope for the burro must not exceed 15 feet in length. For safety and control, participants with unaltered male burros must maintain oversight of their animals. While burros are not permitted to carry the racers, water stations are provided along the course to support the animals and participants. The event is part of the broader local festivities, which include a craft fair and a parade. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
