We Need To Talk About Chevin and Chevin is BS

Two fell races take place on Otley Chevin with HQ at Station Top, East Chevin Road, Otley (opposite Wharfedale Farmers Market) LS21 3BD. Both routes run on public footpaths and trails over dirt, rocky ground and grass, and both use a provided route map for recces only; GPX may not be used on race day under FRA rules.

Distances:

  • 14 km / 9 miles, Category BM, 650 m elevation.
  • 9 km / 5.5 miles, Category BS, 390 m elevation.

The longer race climbs directly up Jonny Lane and the 217 Chevin Steps to Surprise View, then continues via West Gate, Danefield, Poolscar Wood, Fells Plantation and Miller Lane before a final descent to the finish. Checkpoints are placed along the course and basic navigational skills are required because the course is only partially marked. Use of digital navigation equipment is not allowed.

Entry is limited to 200 runners for each race. Checkpoint 5 (6.5 km) on the BM course has a 70 minute cut off; runners reaching it after 70 minutes will be returned to the start on the return route. The BS race has no cut offs.

A water refill station is located at about 6 km and no cups are provided. All finishers receive a complimentary bottle or can of ale with a non alcoholic option. Medals and tees are optional extras offered at entry to reduce environmental impact. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
