About the race
The Total Coastal event on Saturday 3 April 2027 offers multi-terrain races on the South West Coast Path. Distances:
- 50 km Ultra
- Half Marathon 13.1 miles
The 50 km Ultra runs from Kingswear to Shaldon and includes about 7,000 ft of ascent. The route is roughly 75% trails and follows the coast path for the whole course. Key sections include an initial country lane, about 9 miles of technical coast path to Berry Head, passage around Brixham Harbour, Goodrington Beach, a tarmac middle section to Torquay Harbour, then hilly trails past Babbacombe Beach, under the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, Petitor Downs and the final 6 miles of off-road trails to finish at The Ness at Shaldon with views across the River Teign.
The Half Marathon starts at Preston Green and finishes at The Ness at Shaldon, with just over 3,000 ft of ascent. The route is also about 75% trails, with most tarmac in the early section to Torquay Harbour, then trail sections similar to the Ultra for the final miles.
Navigation uses the South West Coast Path Acorn signposts; marshals and extra signs will be provided in tricky places. The event is cupless; runners must carry their own cup or bottle. Mandatory kit and recommendations include a mobile phone with the race day contacts, GPX route on phone or watch, minimum water capacity (Ultra 1 L, Half 500 ml), showerproof or windproof jacket as required, spare layer or foil blanket, and around £20 for emergencies. Aid stations:
- Ultra: near Brixham, Preston Beach, Ilsham Marine Drive, Maidencombe Car Park.
- Half: Ilsham Marine Drive (mile 5.1), Maidencombe Car Park (mile 10.1).
Finishers receive bespoke medals; the Ultra ribbon is marked 50k. Optional event T-shirt £12. Optional coach transfers from Shaldon to the start locations cost £10. Entry fees: Ultra affiliated £50, unaffiliated £52 (minimum age 21). Half affiliated £38, unaffiliated £40 (minimum age 18). A 10 hour 15 minute cut-off applies to the Ultra and a 6 hour cut-off applies to the Half. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
