About the race

RACE THE LIGHT is a crepuscular winter trail race set at Mothecombe on the Erme Estuary on Saturday 28th November 2026. The event returns for its tenth running and uses trails across the privately owned Flete Estate.

The Classic route covers 8.5 miles of estuarine trail with a double crossing of the River Erme estuary, so competitors will encounter wet terrain and tidal considerations. The course starts at the bottom of the slipway on Coastguards Beach and finishes with an uphill climb to the SchoolhouseDevon restaurant above the water. Minimum age for the Classic is 16 years. Each finisher receives a bespoke RACE THE LIGHT medal.

A longer option, RACE THE LIGHT Erme & Hams Half Marathon, follows the Classic route with an extra five miles added, including sections of the South Hams SWCP running back toward the Erme estuary. The half marathon requires runners to reach the final crossing within three hours or face being unable to continue. Minimum age for the half marathon is 17 years.

The event is permitted by the Trail Running Association and is held under England Athletics rules. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
