Thumbs Up Vertical Challenge
The Thumbs Up Vertical Challenge is an mountain running event held in the Thumb Open Space of Estes Park, Colorado. The course is situated at an elevation of 7,522 feet and is limited to a field size of 40 participants. This event uses an invite or select-only registration process via UltraSignup.
The format consists of an out-and-back trail measuring 2 km per lap. Each lap includes 540 feet of vertical gain. Participants ascend the trail, collect a poker chip at the turnaround point, and return to the start to deposit the chip in a designated jar. This process is repeated throughout the day, and final rankings are determined by the total number of chips collected at the conclusion of the event.
Distances and Milestones
While the event follows a repeating lap format, specific patches are awarded to runners who reach established elevation milestones based on their number of ascents:
- 14 ascents - Estes Park milestone (7,522')
- 18 ascents - Deer Mountain milestone (10,103')
- 26 ascents - Longs Peak milestone (14,259')
Event Logistics
The event is cupless, requiring participants to provide their own reusable hydration containers. Self-sufficiency is expected, though aid station details are typically provided closer to the event date. There is no parking available at the trailhead; participants must arrange for drop-offs, bicycle to the location, or run to the starting point.
