The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra
The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra is an ultrarunning event held at the North Alabama Land Trust Wade Mountain Preserve, at the Spragins Hollow Trailhead near Huntsville, AL. The event follows the backyard ultra format in which runners complete repeated loops and remain in the event only while they complete each loop within the allotted hour.
Each loop measures exactly 4.167 miles (4 miles 880 feet). The daylight course uses runnable single-track trails that include Devils Race Track, Wade Mountain, Shovelton, and Rock Wall trails, with a short road out-and-back at the start to separate the field. After dark the course is moved to an out-and-back on the paved Spragins Hollow Road. The event requires competitors to be in the starting corral when the horn sounds to begin each loop.
Event rules state that each loop must be completed within the hour to count, no personal aid is allowed during a loop, and artificial aids such as trekking poles are prohibited. Slower runners must allow passes and non-competitors are not allowed on the course. The winner is the last individual able to complete a loop that no other runner can match; if no one completes an extra loop over all others, there is no winner. Results will record distance covered for all participants.
Participants receive event apparel and a finisher cap, and any runner reaching 24 hours or 100 miles earns a buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
