The Big Pilgrimage
The Big Pilgrimage is a point to point mixed terrain running event offering two distances. The route follows the start of a historic Pilgrim Trail called The Old Way, running along coastal and countryside trails from Mayflower Park in Southampton.
The event offers these distances:
- 15 Mile finishing at Titchfield Abbey
- Marathon finishing at Boundary Oak School, near Wickham
The course includes a short boat crossing of the Hamble River from Hamble foreshore to Warsash. At the foreshore runners are invited to take a small bag of BigFeat Pick N Mix sweets before boarding the vessels. The route passes pilgrimage landmarks such as Netley Castle, Netley Abbey, the Chapel at Royal Victoria Country Park and Titchfield Abbey; participants collect a sticker at each landmark to create a collectable race bib.
Logistics and support details include pre booked coach transport from the finish locations to the start at Mayflower Park for a fee of £10, bag drop tents at each start with transported bags to finishes, fully marked course, well stocked aid stations, and on course safety and medical support. Runners must carry at least 500 ml of fluid, are advised to carry appropriate clothing for changing weather, and are strongly advised to download the GPX file of the route. Canicross entries are not accepted. Runners can opt to have a tree planted instead of a finishers medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
